Royal Decree 80/2026 Amending the Name of the Public Prosecution

We, Haitham bin Tarik, the Sultan of Oman

after perusal of the Basic Statute of the State,

the Judicial Authority Law issued by Royal Decree 90/99,

the Public Prosecution Law issued by Royal Decree 92/99,

and Royal Decree 35/2022 regarding the Governance of the Administration of Judicial Affairs,

and in pursuance of public interest,

have decreed as follows

Article I

The name of the “Public Prosecution” [Al-Idi’aa Al-Am] is hereby amended to the “Public Prosecution” [Al-Niyaba Al-Ama].

Article II

The phrases “Public Prosecution” [Al-Idi’aa Al-Am] and “Public Prosecutor” are hereby replaced with the phrases “Public Prosecution” [Al-Niyaba Al-Ama] and “Attorney General”  wherever they occur in laws and royal decrees.

The job titles “Deputy Public Prosecutor”, “Assistant Public Prosecutors”, “Chief Public Prosecutors”, “Senior Public Prosecution Officers”, “Junior Public Prosecution Officers”, and “Public Prosecution Associates” are also hereby replaced with the titles “Deputy Attorneys General”, “Assistant Attorneys General”, “Chief Attorneys General” , “Senior Attorney General Officers”, “Junior Attorney General Officers”, and “Attorney General Associates” wherever they occur in laws and royal decrees.

Article III

All that is contrary to this decree, or in conflict with its provisions, is hereby repealed.

Article IV

This decree must be published in the Official Gazette, and comes into force on the date of its issuance.

Translation Note: In the GCC, the terms Al-Idi’aa Al-Am and Al-Niyaba Al-Ama are both typically translated into English as Public Prosecution. However, the title of the figure in charge of Al-Idi’aa Al-Am is officially translated as the Public Prosecutor, while the head of Al-Niyaba Al-Ama is known as the Attorney General.
